Towards Software-Aided Scientific Discoveries

By Sabine Mcneill of 3D Metrics

Looking at the size of the 'science' tag, I feel compelled to write a few intels with that tag. For I consider it a great privilege that I have come up with the kind of discoveries and insights that I've had. BUT these insights HAVE to be expressed as software.

I guess it is conceivable that "paper-based" thinking could produce a different kind of science than "screen-based" thinking. In fact, a friend of mine who is familiar with my innovative approach to data and image analysis, sent me recently an article that I linked to on my blog: Towards the Fourth Paradigm.

It's the review of a book that came out of Microsoft Research and 'predicts' a new kind of science that is derived from data - by new visualization, management and analysis tools.

Yeah, but more of the same won't make a difference, will it? Hence my 'quantum leap' of conceptualisation in terms of software methods that are the practical results of my thinking.

But the real practicality will only 'exist' once I've got a vendible product. Strange: even though 'intellectual property' (IP) is considered to be 'valuable', I have found it impossible to sell.

But my thinking has created a new 'framework' for thinking and new instruments of observation. Watch this space. For the right time will come, also for my 'ideas'...

I studied maths and computing in Germany, worked as a software diagnostician at CERN (European Centre for Nuclear Research) in Geneva and became an event organiser and online activist. During the last 13 years I practised "software-aided thinking" and came up with astonishing insights that have to be expressed as software. That's my innovation to science, through technology!

Contributor's Note

I guess it should be obvious that science is entirely institutionalised. Scientific commerce, too. Independent scientists who might want to use social media or seek the promotion of their websites are quite unheard of, I guess...

I find you intel very interesting and informative. Being a 74 year old newbie, your stories are sometimes beyond my comprehension, but I enjoy the experience.
Keep up the good intels.
Frederick

Thanks, Frederick, for your appreciation!

It's a nice experience to write in a kind of jointly dis-jointed blog. In a way I miss the 'stream' of continuous intels, but maybe that would be too much.
